‘Wally Amos Day’

In the USA, during the upcoming holiday weekend of the nation’s 235th birthday — Washington, DC is also celebrating the 75th birthday of an entrepreneurial icon, Wally Amos.

The famous founder of the gourmet chocolate chip cookie industry is also a passionate literacy advocate.  DC’s Mayor, Vincent Gray, has proclaimed July 1, 2011 as WALLY AMOS DAY.

A midday celebration (held at DC’s main public library downtown)

will be free to attend & open to the public.

This is a cross-generational birthday event with Seniors & Children … and is dually a salute to literacy.  Adult attendees will be encouraged to sign the ReadItLoud promise on-site.

Mr. Amos is the organization’s National Spokesperson.

Participants from DC, Maryland, and Virginia have been invited to attend the 12 noon – 3:00 pm celebration.

Mr. Amos will be traveling to the nation’s capital from his home in Hawaii

to receive the tribute and attend the festivities.

A very busy travel itinerary often finds Wally Amos all over the USA, reading aloud to children!

On his birthday,

time has been set aside for Mr. Amos to read aloud to the grandchildren (ages 5-12) of Seniors

who will both be transported in by busloads.

Naturally, cookies will be served.

This shall be a great demonstration of how adults can have fun reading aloud while children reap enormous benefit from it.

Media attendance for this heartwarming activity is expected

to include local (and possibly affiliate) tv news coverage.

７月1日が　“ウォーリー・エイモス・デー” に制定されました。
36年前、世界で初めてグルメクッキーを作りお店を開いて、全米のみならず世界のファイマス・エイモスになった

ウォーリー・エイモスが、クッキーのみならず、子供たちへの読み聞かせ運動に人生を捧げ、

アメリカ国民に貢献したことを称えられることになりました。
75歳の誕生日を迎える、2011年7月1日がその日となります。
当日は、12時より15時まで

マーティン・ルーサー・キング Jr. 図書館にて表彰とイベントが行われます。
その内容は、親子を集めての読み聞かせのイベントで、

彼の人生をかけているRead it LOUD! のキャンペーン目標でもあります500万人の親たちがサインをして、

子供の誕生から６歳になるまで、毎日最低10分間の読み聞かせをすることを誓うことを促す時でもあります。
翌日は、彼のファイマス・エイモス時代の象徴となったシャツとパナマハットが展示されています

スミソニアン博物館にツアーを行います。
7月4日の、235回目のアメリカ独立記念日の夜の花火が上がるまで、皆でお祝いが続くことでしょう。
